Cricket Players Headed to Mediation
The Australian Cricketers Association and Cricket Australia are likely headed to mediation. The player’s association has been repeatedly enraged by the decision of the CA board to send out contracts to players while engaged in the pay dispute.
A week prior to the current contract, and following the latest meeting of the two groups, CA’s lead negotiator sent a letter to the ACA chief executive stated the board would allow all players to profit share above projections and increase pay for domestic male players. Both of these issues have been a primary part of the dispute. Originally, higher payments were offered only to the top level male and female players, while a freeze was put on domestic players. The dispute comes at the same time as the Big Bash League broadcast rights deal will likely provide a great deal of revenue for the game.
At the same time the letter was sent to the ACA, all players received contract offers that specified no terms or conditions. The ACA encouraged players not to sign their contract offers.
The ACA has now called for an emergency mediation session to be conducted at CEO level. The ACA also stated it will continue to look for ways to resolve the dispute and stated “We are motivated by a sense of duty to the game and its players and frustration at the current process. ”
As of June 30th, male and female cricket players are considered unemployed, and will no know what they can expect until the mediation session takes place.
