Kennesaw State University Launches Master’s Program in Mediation
Kennesaw State University is now offering a master’s degree in conflict management that teaches media skills and prepared graduates to lead mediation programs. The degree is offered through the School of Conflict, Management, Peacebuilding and Development.
The goal of the program is to train students to be able to work as peacemakers in domestic and international disputes. There will also be research conducted on conflict and peace, and how mediation can play a role in eliminating conflict and achieving peace.
The program launched in mid-March with a panel discussion on mediation and the signing of two memorandums that widen the scope of education related to conflict resolution.
The school has entered into a partnership with the United States Institute of Peace, which is a government-funded organization focused on preventing, mitigating, and resolving conflict around the globe.
Students are also able to work through one of two certificate programs, including one in the foundations of conflict management and peacebuilding or one that teaches critical skills for negotiating, arbitrating, and mediation.
Additionally, the program will work with the Bi-National Group, Inc., which is an organization offering legal support services, which will provide training for mediators, as well as judges and lawyers, throughout Mexico in the updated constitutional changes that focus on mediation and other criminal and civil processes.
The opening panel of the program included Matt Damon, actor and member of water.org and the concept of Water Equity. Other participants included co-founder Gary White and vice president for the Center of Applied Conflict Transformation Carla Koppell.
