Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court heard the case of a man who beat his 73 year old uncle recently with a broomstick. The fight began when the defendant learned his nephew had been drinking his fruit juice and confronted his relative. The nephew was charged with assault.
According to the testimony given by those involved, the nephew would drink the juice whenever it was left inside of the refrigerator. The victim noticed the juice level had decreased and at one point, nearly caught his nephew in the act.
On September 23rd, he referenced the missing juice by saying “a mussi duppy a eat out my food and drink out my juice.” The nephew’s mother, who knew her son was drinking the juice, told the victim to speak to her son.
An argument arose and led to the nephew hitting his uncle on the shoulder with a broom. The police were called and the nephew was arrested and charged with assault against his uncle. He pleaded guilty to the accusations.
The prosecuting attorney asked if mediation was an option, but the older man refused, stating that his nephew had brought bad men to his home several times. He also stated that the man’s mother had told the man to come and hit the older man in the mouth.
The judge heard the man’s point of view, but explained to him that mediation could make it easier to resolve the issue and told him he had “nothing to lose.”
