Mayor Bob Filner's Attorneys in Mediation That Includes Possible Resignation
Tuesday, September, 3, 2013
San Diego Mayor Bob Filner’s future has been determined in closed-door mediation hearings that began on Monday and closed on Wednesday, at which point an undisclosed settlement and decision were reached.
Former communications director for the mayor, Irene McCormack Jackson, has accused the mayor of sexual harassment, and is suing both the mayor and the city for compensation. After agreeing to take the matter to the more confidential forum of mediation, it was determined that retired Federal Judge J. Lawrence Irving will preside over the mediation proceedings.
According to City Attorney Jan Goldsmith, the details regarding the settlement would not be released to the public until the details are presented to the San Diego City Council in a private meeting to be held at the end of this week. After the City Council is brought up-to-date on the results of the mediation, a report may be issued at a public meeting, according to Goldsmith.
Filner’s attorney has declined to comment on the outcome of the settlement and Filner, himself, has just finished two weeks of sexual harassment behavioral therapy due to the multiple allegations of sexual harassment that have been made against him. To date, at least 18 women have accused the mayor of sexual misconduct while in office.
In July, Filner stated that he had "failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me" and that he was embarrassed by his actions. However, in the same statement, he affirmed that he would not step down from office and that when all the facts are given, his resignation would not be necessary.
After serving 20 years in Congress, the 70-year-old Filner was elected as San Diego’s mayor in 2012.
