Mediation Lawyers Wanted in Minnesota Budget Stalemate
Mediation lawyers are wanted in Minnesota, according to the state's governor, Mark Dayton, who announced this week that the budget stalemate with Republicans is entrenched to such an extent that outside assistance is warranted. Mirroring events in Washington, D.C., a shutdown of the state government seems imminent if some kind of help is not forthcoming; analysts predict that a shutdown will occur within a month if the disagreement over priorities is not resolved.
Mediation Lawyers the Solution?
Republican members of the state legislature were less than enthusiastic about the idea of a mediation attorney coming in to help the two sides come to terms with each other. This is possibly due to the likelihood that mediation lawyers would in fact be able to broker a deal. This is an uneasy prospect for the Republicans, who currently prefer to stick to their tough stances on taxes and spending.
Dayton wants to see the mediation proceed. "The people of Minnesota deserve us to make every possible effort," he remarked. "It's not uncommon for two sides that have their differences to bring in somebody to assist in resolving that so we can avoid the shutdown. I want to do everything possible to avoid the July 1 shutdown."
Mediation lawyers are tasked with helping lawmakers, because Minnesota requires that a two-year budget be approved by that date. If this is not accomplished, the state government will shut down, curtailing services to residents as well as stopping paychecks for state workers, who number in the tens of thousands.
