People injured in the shooting that took place at the country music festival in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017 could be headed to mediation with MGM Resorts. Settlement talks began between the two parties just over a year after the shooting took place.

According to the victims, MGM Resorts bears some responsibility for the incident because the shooter operated from the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino, which is owned by MGM. The gunman fired out of the window from high up in the hotel down into the music festival that was taking place in a nearby parking lot. The incident, which included 58 fatalities, was the deadliest mass shooting in modern history in the United States.

MGM Resorts says it hopes to avoid “years of litigation” from civil lawsuits that have been filed in federal courts in Nevada, California, and five other states.

An agreement between MGM and plaintiffs was approved by a US District Court judge. The agreement included a desire by both sides to settle out-of-court and postpone court hearings until talks could be held. The mediation agreement follows a federal court panel’s denial of MGM’s request to centralize more than a dozen civil lawsuits filed by victims.

Hundreds of people were injured in the attack and more civil lawsuits are expected to be filed in the coming weeks and months. Concert goers have also considered lawsuits against the organizers of the event and various companies that handle security in the area. Many were alarmed by how the incident was handled, and there are also claims that the hotel could have done more to monitor the shooter’s behavior in the days leading up to the shooting.
