Attorneys for Perth lawyer Lloyd Rayner continue to prep for trial over the multi-million dollar defamation case against the West Australian government, despite efforts to mediate the case. Rayney filed suit against the state of WA after he was named as the prime suspect in the murder of his wife in 2007. Rayney consistently denied involvement in the murder and was found not guilty in 2012.

In the past, Rayney’s attorneys claimed to have hope the case could be settled and not go to trial. Now, with an upcoming mediation scheduled for the end of May, his attorneys continue to prep for trial as they were already doing.

The attorney for the government wants mediation delayed until after the Legal Practitioners Complaints Committee decides if it will proceed with action against Rayney in the State Administrative Tribunal, which could result in Rayney’s loss of ability to practice law. This would affect his future earnings, which is considered a key aspect of negotiating a settlement. The Supreme Court Justice ruled the mediation will proceed as planned, citing the need for progress in the case.

Speaking on behalf of Rayner, his attorney stated the team remains hopeful an agreement can be reached during mediation, despite the trial preparations. He further explained since mediation is unpredictable, it is necessary for the team to plan for plan B, if necessary. The goal is to clear Rayney’s name and gain vindication for what he’s been through. If that requires going to trial, Rayney and his attorneys are willing to do so.
