Emily Altman is a mediator and arbitrator in New York City who brings more than 30 years of hands-on international and domestic Wall Street experience to her practice as a neutral.   Extensively trained in mediation and arbitration, Altman combines a deep understanding of business and finance with expertise in negotiating with a diverse range of individuals and groups.

Her practice ranges from multi-billion dollar mortgage-backed securities cases to disputes involving breach of contract, insurance, real estate, securities sales and trading, bank fraud, intellectual property, employment contracts, private equity investments, and partnership and family business issues.

Mediating since 2011, Altman spent over a decade as Head of International Government Relations and a Managing Director of JPMorgan Chase and, before that, Head of International Government Relations for Morgan Stanley, negotiating with the US government, foreign governments, regulators and other global financial institutions on transactions and issues central to the businesses of the banks and their clients.  She has also been a Senior Policy Advisor at Fleishman-Hillard, the global communications firm, where she advised the firm's clients on US and international financial services reform issues.  She began her career at Davis Polk & Wardwell, where she practiced international and domestic banking and securities law for more than a decade.

She is a Special Master at the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, First Department, a FINRA arbitrator, and a mediator for the Commercial Division of the New York State Supreme Court, New York County.

A native New Yorker, Altman is a cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a graduate of Columbia Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review. She clerked for Judge Jack B. Weinstein of the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York.  She is a member of the New York State Bar.

Altman is the recipient of the Fulbright Award for Global Business Cooperation and the Securities Industry Association's Distinguished Leadership and Chairman’s Awards.

Altman takes an energetic approach to mediation, relying on rigorous risk-based analysis, careful preparation and persistence.  In separate caucuses and joint sessions, she helps the parties identify and refine their key underlying interests,  She uses "shuttle diplomacy" to narrow areas of difference, encourages practical solutions and, with the parties' consent, will make mediator's proposals at appropriate times. She considers legal counsel, with their extensive knowledge of the particular case, to be indispensable contributors to the mediation process and works closely with them.

As an arbitrator, Altman is commercially-minded, combining neutrality with efficiency and a willingness to explore relevant issues in depth. ?She believes both content and case management are essential and that the benefits of arbitration are realized by balancing sound legal judgment with practical experience and common sense.
