Former University of Louisville Player Engaged in Mediation with NCAA
Tuesday, February, 19, 2019
Attorneys representing the NCAA recently met with Luke Hancock, former University of Louisville basketball player regarding a lawsuit over the school’s 2013 title. The mediation session was an attempt to resolve the dispute concerning the title, but did not guarantee a resolution.
According to Hancock, the mediation session lasted all day. He did not indicate if a resolution was reached during the session because according to his statement, he was advised by his attorneys that if he said too much he would violate the existing court order. Mediation is typically a confidential process.
Hancock is not the only former player involved in the dispute. At least four other former member of the school’s basketball team sued the NCAA for reinstatement after the association stripped the school of its championship title due to an escort scandal. This led to individual financial damage and the loss of accolades, as well. The men filed the lawsuit, accusing the NCAA of portraying members of the men's basketball team in a “false light. ” They are requesting the association to restore the team's championship and the individual things that were lost as a result of the stripping.
Hancock and the NCAA were ordered into mediation in September, but no official timeline was set. Mediation could continue until a settlement is reached or the lawsuit is dropped. If the two sides were not able to reach a resolution, the case would return to the Jefferson Circuit Court. Hancock acknowledged it could take a long time to reach a resolution and mediation could continue indefinitely.
The University of Louisville is not involved in the lawsuit directly, but it has acknowledged that the outcome could affect the school’s basketball program.
