Hardt began his legal career in the Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps, where he served as trial counsel until 1975. He then practiced law in Elkhorn, WI. In 1983, he moved to Naples, Florida. There he practiced with the firms of Hardt & Stewart and Roetzel & Andress LPA for 20 years until he was appointed to the circuit court in late 2003
